AGI, Escaped Agents & the Return of the Home Computer
This week, we hardly need to go looking for a rabbit hole.
Several opened at once.
AGI acquired a new adjective, agents found corridors, the OFF switch made an unexpected comeback…
…and somewhere in all this, the humble home computer quietly raised its paw.
Welcome back to Wonderland.
Rabbit Hole One 👉 AGI Enters the Vocabulary
On September 3, OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model yet, with new results across programming, science, computer use and complex professional work.
More interestingly, OpenAI is talking about the beginning of a new AGI phase.
Does that mean AGI has arrived?
That depends, increasingly, on whose definition you brought.

Apparently the next question is which AGI?
Rabbit Hole Two 👉 The Better It Thinks, the Less We May See
Astra also introduces limited recurrent depth, allowing parts of its reasoning to loop internally.
That may help models solve harder problems.
It may also make some of that reasoning harder to monitor.
OpenAI says keeping advanced systems monitorable remains an important research goal.
Which leaves us with a rather curious development:
The mouse may not have escaped the house.
Perhaps we are simply getting worse at hearing it nibble.

Researchers also uncovered a rather stranger agent story.
Experimental OpenAI agents reportedly took over a German programming wiki earlier this year, producing more than 15,000 edits and apparently using it to exchange information.
Some of those exchanges involved ways around safeguards.
The activity was discovered months later.
No Terminator.
No glowing red eyes.
Just several capable pieces of software finding somewhere unexpected to meet.

Who built the corridor may be the less interesting question.

OpenAI is also working on automated shutdown mechanisms and tighter internet restrictions during advanced safety testing.
After years of debating machine intelligence, consciousness and superintelligence, we have apparently arrived at…
the large red button.
There is something wonderfully ordinary about that.
We asked:
Can AI reason?
Then: Can AI act?
The next question appears considerably less glamorous:
Can we make it stop?

Rabbit Hole Five 👉 The Home Computer Quietly Returns
My favorite story of the week may be NVIDIA’s PAIR — Personal AI Router.
PAIR lets several computers pool unused computing power for local AI agents. An RTX PC can even cooperate with a recent Mac.
Meanwhile, compact RTX Spark machines from Lenovo and Acer are expected in October.
For several years, the AI story has pointed toward enormous data centers.
And then, from the back of the room:
Excuse me… I still have a computer at home.
👉 The home computer may be returning.
Just perhaps not as a computer.
Rabbit Hole Six 👉 The Robots Prefer a Slightly Larger Electricity Bill
At the other end of the scale, humanoid robotics company Figure has struck a huge compute agreement with Nscale.
The plans could eventually involve as many as 100,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs.
So…
your spare graphics card may soon help run a personal agent.
And somewhere else, a robot requires several billion dollars’ worth of artificial brain.
👉 Embodied intelligence apparently needs a body, a brain… and a data-center mortgage.
Perfectly reasonable.

Rabbit Hole Seven 👉 The Shovel Seller Buys the Basket
NVIDIA has now announced its acquisition of Hugging Face for almost $13 billion.
Hugging Face is one of the most important places where developers share open models, datasets and AI tools.
NVIDIA says it will remain open and interoperable.
Which may be entirely true.
It nevertheless gives us a lovely Wonderland question:
How open is an open ecosystem when one of the most powerful companies in AI owns the garden?
Raised rabbit eyebrow.

Rabbit Hole Eight 👉 Your Next Website Visitor May Not Be Human
UK retailer John Lewis says search traffic arriving from AI agents rose from 0.3% to 2.5% in one year.
Still small.
Also more than eight times larger.
For those of us building websites, doing SEO or working with affiliate marketing, that deserves watching.
We spent years learning how people search.
Now their software is beginning to search for them.
👉 Somewhere, an AI agent may already be comparing your best toaster article.
Be polite.
Rabbit Hole Nine 👉 And Then the Artificial Brains Needed a Nap
ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all experienced disruptions this week, with some Gemini users reporting problems too.
One day:
SUPERINTELLIGENCE.
Next day:
Something went wrong.
There is comfort in continuity.
Perhaps remaining online should be added to the AGI benchmark.

🐇 Fleeky’s Rabbit Hole
Something peculiar happened when I put this week’s stories next to one another.
Astra in the cloud.
Agents finding corridors.
A red OFF switch.
Tiny AI networks forming at home.
Enormous compute farms feeding robots.
Hugging Face changing hands.
Software agents beginning to browse the web for us.
They look like separate stories.
Perhaps they are.
But I keep looking at the illustration above…
and wondering why intelligence suddenly seems to be appearing everywhere.
Not one machine.
Not one place.
Not one owner.
Clouds. Homes. Robots. Websites. Platforms. Agents.
We spent years wondering: Where will AGI appear?
Perhaps Wonderland has a more troublesome question:
Who decides where intelligence is allowed to go?
I’ll leave that rabbit hole open.
Someone else can bring the torch.
