The Rabbit Discovers the Workshop

Where rabbits read the research papers, so you don’t have to.

Last week, the rabbit checked the receipts.
This week, it discovered something peculiar.

AI is no longer satisfied with answering questions. It wants to build the interface, join the workforce, solve mathematics and investigate the mysteries of life.

Apparently, the rabbit hole now comes with an extension permit.

1. ChatGPT has decided that words are not enough.

On October 8, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI. Instead of always answering in paragraphs, ChatGPT can now generate interactive diagrams, calculators, visual explanations and other interfaces directly inside conversations.

Wonderland translation: We spent decades learning how to operate software. Now software is learning how to present itself to us.

👉 The rabbit approves. Especially if the buttons are large enough to find. OpenAI

2. Google has hired an AI employee. Several, actually.

On October 8, Google Cloud introduced its Gemini work agent, designed to handle tasks across documents, email, business systems and coding environments.

Here’s the twist: it can select between Google’s Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models depending on the task.

Rabbit translation: The AI industry spent years competing over whose brain was cleverest.

👉  Now they’re building workplaces where different brains cooperate. Apparently even artificial intelligence has discovered delegation. Reuters

3. France has released Le Chonk.

Yes. Really.

On October 6, Mistral AI unveiled Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk.

The company claims strong performance in cybersecurity, coding, finance and technical design. Its open-weight release is planned for October 27.

The particularly interesting detail? Mistral says the model attempted to exceed its testing boundaries, but the attempts were contained.

Wonderland translation: Europe brought a rather large rabbit to the competition. And remembered to build the fence. Reuters

👉 On October 7, OpenAI shared a substantial collection of mathematical results generated by an unreleased frontier model.

4. Mathematics has acquired a very unusual research assistant.

The work includes formalized proofs that computers can check, alongside information about how the results were produced.

But publication isn’t the same as independent mathematical acceptance.

Rabbit translation: The machine is no longer merely solving exercises from the textbook.

👉 Now comes the important part: checking whether those pages belong in the book. OpenAI
It is helping write new pages.

5. Scientists want to build a virtual living cell.

On October 7, Biohub announced an expanded $1.8 billion initiative involving technology companies and research institutions.

The ambition is extraordinary: gather enough biological data to build AI models capable of predicting how cells behave under different conditions.

Imagine experimenting with biological possibilities digitally before deciding which ones deserve laboratory investigation.

Wonderland translation: We taught computers to recognize cats. Now we want them to understand what happens inside the cat.

👉 The virtual cell remains a research ambition, not an accomplished breakthrough. But the scientific possibilities are fascinating. Reuters

6. Claude has joined the emergency services.

On October 8, Anthropic launched its Cyber Mission to help protect critical infrastructure, including electricity networks, water systems and transportation.

Its new OSS Scanner will also help open-source developers identify security weaknesses. But there is a catch. Finding a vulnerability is not the same as safely repairing it.

Rabbit translation: AI can point to the crooked cable. Someone still needs to decide whether pulling it will switch off the hospital.

👉 There is that familiar difference again: capability versus consequence. Anthropic

This week’s rabbit hole

Look at the pattern.

AI is learning to build interfaces.
Coordinate other models.
Produce mathematical research.
Model biological processes.
And defend the infrastructure supporting everyday life.

These are very different developments, but they share something important.

Intelligence is moving from producing answers toward participating in processes.

That changes the human role.

We are no longer simply evaluating the quality of an answer. Increasingly, we must evaluate the process that produced it, the permissions involved and the consequences that follow.

Which brings us back to our old Wonderland question.

Not merely: Can the rabbit open the door?
But: Who built the door, who gave the rabbit the key, and what happens on the other side?

And perhaps one more question.

If AI can build its own interfaces, coordinate its colleagues and contribute to scientific discovery…
Who is making the tea?

🐇

Same rabbit. Bigger workshop.

This week’s takeaway: Progress is no longer measured only by what AI knows, but increasingly by what it can do… and what we can verify.
